This program is designed to provide emergency response personnel (law enforcement, fire, and EMS) with the key information to make informed tactical decisions at school site incidents such as school shootings, other campus violence, fires, earthquakes and other man-made or natural disasters. The schools in this program represent small unique communities within a larger community of a city or town. Each school community presents its own tactical challenges during a critical incident or crisis situation. It is imperative that we plan, prepare, and train before a critical incident occurs in order to respond effectively and safely. The process of gathering the information for this program is part of that effort, and reinforces the importance of school site safety to emergency response agencies, school districts, and the larger community.

The information  in this program can be accessed by any computer that has a standard Internet browser, Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. A software program called Microsoft FrontPage was used to create the computer documents. The Safe Schools program functions similarly to a common Internet website for ease of navigation.

We would like to acknowledge and thank Deputy Noah Brommeland of the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office for his kind assistance in sharing the School Site Survey program he developed for his agency, and in offering ideas which have been incorporated into the Alameda County Safe Schools Information Management Program.
